Young Beans

GWG is launching a new box scheme in the spring of 2011. The new box scheme replaces the existing one. We have been working with local community members to create a new bag scheme tailored for people who share our commitment to local food.

People are realising the importance of local food, for freshness, taste, the environment, and for the security of having local food for the future. We are working together to create the local food systems that we need to help our communities thrive through the 21st century.

We believe that local food has a huge number of benefits:

Low Food Miles
Changing your eating habits can be a significant contribution towards stopping dangerous climate change.
Food security
Increasing food security as oil prices rise and it becomes increasingly more expensive to rely on imported food.
Freshness
Our food can be picked in the morning and go straight onto your plate that evening!
The Local Economy
By spending your money locally with small businesses rather than supermarkets, you are helping a diverse local economy to thrive and keeping your money circulating in your community.
Trust
You can get to know who is growing your food so you can build up trust that they are doing it in a way you approve of. You can even get involved!

  • We are increasing the amount of own crop we are putting in all our veg bags, and aim to put all own crop in our bags (apart from potatoes, carrots and onions which we can buy easily from local farms from June to October).
  • When we can't supply own crop, we will look to farms in Lancashire and Yorkshire first to fill our bags, and only then to the UK market.
  • All bought in vegetables will be from certified organic farms from the UK, with the exception of the 'hungry gap' period in May/June when we may struggle supply good quality UK carrots, potatoes, and onions, and may have to look to Europe.
  • We will put as much as possible UK fruit in the fruit bags, and we will never buy fruit from outside Europe unless it is fairly traded.
  • As with the veg there is a guarantee that none of the produce we supply has been airfreighted.

  • We ask you to pay up front or on a standing order for a minimum period of a month. This means we have to spend less time on administration, and more time on what you want us to do - growing you fabulous vegetables!
  • Be prepared to be adventurous with your cooking as we supply you with the best vegetables this country has to offer. We will help you with this by supplying recipes!
  • Join our Supporters group for a minimum donation of £10. This will allow us to engage with you and make sure we are supplying you with what you want!
